STONE

First Presbyterian Church
of Oklahoma

This 50-year-old large church was decaying. Very large stones had shifted, fractured and worn down. The weather in OK can be quite brutal. Large ornate stained glass windows were showing the changes with cracks and decay. PICCO worked with masons to design, detail and provide drawings for fabrication of new stone pieces that did not just replace what was there but overcome expected failure points due to visual damage. PICCO employed modern joinery to a historically built building—no mean feat.

PICCO inspected, recorded, identified failure points and re-engineered the structure. For example, arches over stain glass windows needed to be re-engineered and redesigned. Installation was done in situ.

Private Residence - Toronto

This PICCO Engineering stone engineering project was a very high-end residential custom contemporary home. The owners were very particular on the material colour, texture, and grain size. Our scope included a quarry visit to Branco Do Mar. The slabs reviewed demonstrated a grain size too coarse, and a colour range that appeared to vary quite extensively from slab to slab and within a
single slab. The slabs also included some inclusions.

The architectural samples had a fine grain size and they were very consistent. We visited Our Lady of Fatima church to review the extent of the colour range of the Branco material and found it to be unacceptable. We visited alternate quarries in the area and found Rosal limestone that matched much closer to the control samples we had in our possession. The owner was very particular on the quality, colour, and technical properties of the stone.

PICCO Engineering was hired to provide full service consulting which included stone selection, design assist, quality control program, visits to the quarry and fabrication facility, shop drawings, shop tickets, engineering, and field inspections.

 TELUS Centre for Performance

Located on Bloor St. West, Toronto’s center for luxury shopping and adjacent to the Royal Ontario Museum, the new Royal Conservatory Telus Centre for Performance and Learning, Koerner Hall compliments its surroundings. The new additions to the Royal Conservatory of Music act as a backdrop against the existing heritage buildings. The space between the old and the new buildings is enclosed to create a sky-lit pedestrian court. Contemporary glazing systems for the new additions provide a dynamic counterpoint to the poly-chromatic facades of the heritage buildings. This project demonstrated PICCO Engineering's ability to seamlessly integrate modern techniques with past accomplishments.

Utopia Sculpture

Utopia–as the name suggests, is a place of ideal perfections. This project is another masterpiece by Jaume Plensa (Spanish Artist), made up of 4 female sculptures: Laura, Wilsis, Marianna and Julia. This project involves large white marble pieces carved to form the sculpture such that no single piece is identical to the next. Some of the large pieces weigh over 3.5 tons and required very unique anchoring for support and lifting. The project was detailed using steel frames, unistruts, a disc connection and heavy loadbearing steel supports.
